You and your furry friends can use the lovely, big, shared garden, which has wonderful views and there’s somewhere to sit and enjoy the sunshine or a drink in the evening sun. There’s a village shop, pubs, and a tearoom in Rosthwaite and it’s surrounded by fells just waiting to be explored. Keen walkers might want to do some or all of the 15-mile segment of the Coast to Coast route from Rosthwaite to Patterdale, where William Wordsworth spent his childhood. It’s also the start of the Striding Edge path which takes you to the top of Helvellyn. There’s plenty to see nearby, including Galleny Force Waterfall and Black Moss Pot – a great spot for wild swimming – less than 1 mile away. Go canoeing, paddleboarding or kayaking on one of the lakes or rock climbing on the crags. Head to Keswick (6.5 miles away) to do some shopping or eat out – there’s also a cinema and theatre there. For a treat/treatment, book yourselves into the spa 3 miles away.

Surrounded by a delightful mature garden with apple trees, wild borders and relaxed seating, this apartment evolves throughout the year to offer something different each season. The open-plan living space has a dual aspect, with patio doors opening onto a raised veranda flooding the property with natural light. The views stretch out in all directions, with open moorland to one side, estuary to the other and the various fells of the Lakeland District just waiting to be recognised from the lounge area. It would be easy to whittle away an afternoon watching the ever-changing landscape and identifying some of the Lake Districts better-known fells such as Coniston Old Man and even Scafell Pike on a clear day. A gated entrance offers access to an off-road gravel parking space before taking a winding path up the gentle slope through the garden towards the property. Ensure that the gates are fully open. If arriving in the dark, the garden light switch is situated on the left hand gate post (this is a dual switch, the other being situated inside). A torch may be useful as there are no street lights - only stars! Steps lead up the veranda to the front door of this elevated property. Although modest in size, it is well equipped with a fan oven and grill, under-counter fridge with freezer compartment, microwave, and all the cooking and dining supplies you would expect. There isnt a washing machine in the property, but the nearby caravan park has an excellent laundry facility and welcomes non-residents. Left of the front door is a delightful twin bedroom which overlooks the garden. Traditional, elegant decor provides a relaxed and homely feel, while the ornate furniture offers plenty of storage for clothes and belonging. The shower room is accessed from the bedroom and has a full-sized gas powered shower, toilet and wash basin. It is heated by a good-sized radiator which is fuelled from the combination boiler, also housed in this room. It has a wonderful mix of contemporary style blended with original features - perfect for unwinding in after a day out in the Lakes. There is a beautiful wood burner in the open-plan living area, which has open eaves and exposed beams, giving a lovely spacious feel. Outside there is an enclosed garden which boasts views to the local fells of Greystones and Broomfell. There is also storage available for those wishing to bring bikes. The location of the cottage is within easy reach of the lakes of Buttermere, Crummock and Loweswater and their fells as well as Whinlatter Forest. The options for walking and biking at any level from the door or within a short drive are unlimited. There is plenty to do in the local area with Whinlatter Visitor Centre just a few minutes drive away. Facilities include a cafe, bike hire, live Osprey nest video camera (May-Aug) as well as the Go-Ape! high ropes course. Cockermouth is a 10-minute drive away and is home to the Jennings Brewery, which runs a tour for any beer lovers, and Wordsworth House, the birth place of the famous Lakeland poet. Keswick is a 15-minute drive away. Here you can enjoy boating on Derwentwater or visit the bustling town centre with its array of shops, museums, and eateries. For sustenance, a fantastic local pub is just 2 miles away in the village of Lorton. There is also a small village shop with lots of local specialities, and nearby Cockermouth has a supermarket if you need a larger shop. The shower features a luxurious rain head or more invigorating power head. The garden is enclosed and accessed 2 metres from the door. It is very private and has lovely views to the local fells.

Its a great value base for two people keen to get out and explore all that this picturesque area has to offer. Set up a winding lane, Matterdale is a tiny hamlet less than 3 miles from the shores of Ullswater. Widely thought to be one of the most beautiful of the Lakes, Ullswater affords fabulous opportunities for walking, cycling, eating out and messing about in boats. Just down the road lies the neighbouring hamlet of Dockray where you’ll find the Royal Hotel offering excellent pub food, local real ales and a warm welcome. If youd like to venture slightly further afield the vibrant Lakeland towns of Keswick and Penrith are both only 20 minutes drive from the cottage. For the keen fell walkers among you this cottage is exceedingly well placed with Matterdale Common stretching out behind the property as well as the fells of the mighty Helvellyn range within easy striking distance. Its also just a 2-mile potter down to the beautiful Aira Force. Why not catch one of the stately Ullswater launches from nearby Glenridding and let it transport you around the lake taking in the glorious views or giving you the opportunity to explore other areas of the lakeside? if you’re feeling more energetic you could hire a boat or kayak for a more hands on approach to the water. Whether youd like to make the most of all the outdoor opportunities or investigate the great food and real ales in the nearby pubs this cottage makes a great value base. The walking opportunities here are absolutely stunning with everything from big adventures on the mighty Helvellyn range to low level ambles around Aira Force to tempt you. You can also make the most of the beautiful lake either by hiring a kayak and paddling yourself or catching one of the stately Ullswater Steamers and enjoying the picturesque surroundings on a gentle cruise. Cyclists are particularly well served at Hillcrest with the Coast to Coast cycle way literally passing the front door and a wealth of bridleways and small rural roads to explore under pedal power nearby. The convenient location is ideal for exploring the area on foot. Right on the doorstep are fantastic walks including Catbells, Walla Crag, Latrigg, Skiddaw and the old railway line. Derwentwater is a 10-minute stroll through the town. Keswick is a popular destination for tourists and walkers and the town has a friendly and welcoming atmosphere, offering a wide selection of shops, galleries, tearooms, restaurants, pubs, a good museum and a theatre.
