Brixham, Devon
Families will love the central location of this traditional sailor’s cottage, with an unconventional layout that really makes the most of the superb vista across Brixham harbour. In an elevated position above the town, it’s just a few minutes on foot to the town centre and busy fishing port. Accommodation is spread over three floors. Kids will relish their own space – with a bunk room and twin on the ground floor - while Mum and Dad can retreat to the master en-suite at the top of the house. Everyone can congregate on the first floor, and the two TVs will prevent any squabbles for the remote after a long day exploring. On sunny afternoons children will enjoy the cute shady garden room in the split level garden, while you watch the harbour activity from the patio seating. And as the sun goes down, there’s no need to change the view, just head inside and watch from the comfort of the lounge. It’s less than 200 metres down some steep steps to the town centre and the harbour, and only half a mile for those with pushchairs or the less agile. Take a boat trip out around the bay, try your hand at crabbing or take the older kids out on a fishing trip. Younger kids will love the pebbly beaches, half a mile in the other direction from the house, where there’s also a sea water swimming pool. For a larger strip of beach, with a little sand too, head to St Mary’s Bay on the south side of the headland, about a mile by car. Walkers will enjoy the stroll, about 2 miles, which passes Berry Head Lighthouse – with some spectacular clifftop views.
