Hidden in the peaceful Suffolk countryside, this welcoming cottage in the village of Bawdsey sleeps five guests and two canine companions. Alderton, a mile away, has a village shop and a friendly pub, and you’ll be within 1.5 miles of scenic Bawdsey Quay, where the beautiful River Deben meets the sea. From here, you can catch the seasonal foot and cycle ferry across to seaside Felixstowe (22 miles). Stop for homemade cake at the charming quayside cafe and a paddle on the small, sandy beach, with wonderful, far-reaching views of the river and the historic Martello Tower. Just off the hallway of your light-filled rural retreat, there’s a family bathroom and a WC, along with a separate WC. The dining room houses a table and chairs, along with a sofa and armchair. There’s more comfortable seating for all in the cosy living room, with a TV and pretty ornamental fireplace. To the rear is a well-equipped, streamlined kitchen opening onto the garden. Upstairs are three inviting bedrooms: a king-size, a double and a single. Outside, the expansive garden offers mature trees, a large lawn and a picnic table. There is private parking for two cars. Visit the interactive visitor centre at Bawdsey Radar (1.5 miles) to discover the remarkable story of the men and women who worked in top-secret conditions to develop radar. Once across the River Deben, a taxi ride from the ferry to Felixstowe takes five minutes or, if driving, you can stop off at charming Woodbridge (8 miles). The lively market town has lovely waterside walks along the river and one of the UK’s only working tidal mills, generating green energy to produce stoneground flour. Felixstowe has fine cliff gardens and South Beach is a family favourite with gently sloping sands, plus walking and cycle paths.
