The area of outstanding natural beauty between the rivers Tavy and Tamar is home to the little Devon village of Bere Alston. The community historically had a busy port where tin from Dartmoor was shipped. Morwellam Quay, a tiny harbour on the river Tamar just upstream from Bere Alston, served as the passageway for half the world's copper in the 1860s and is today a well-liked tourist destination that chronicles the history of copper mining. Trains travel over the scenic Tamar Valley line between Bere Alston and Plymouth, mostly following the river. The community of Bere Alston has a store and a bar, and there are many beautiful rural hikes. Cotehele, a Tudor manor house with magnificent gardens extending all the way to the Tamar River, and Buckland Abbey, an estate on the Tavy River with artisan studios and family-friendly attractions, are two National Trust sites in the vicinity.

Devon, with its quiet country lanes, patchwork of lush green fields and sleepy villages is not to be missed. Stately home lovers will be spoiled and why not finish with a scrumptious Devonshire cream tea?
