North of Llangollen is the highland town of Ruthin, accessible by the stunning Horseshoe Pass. The city's central square, St Peter's Square, is surrounded by charming half-timbered buildings. Ruthin is home to the oldest timber frame house in Wales, the Nant Clwyd House, the Ruthin Gaol, and the Ruthin Craft Centre, which showcases the work of globally renowned artists and craftsmen. It's only a short drive from Ruthin to Lake Brenig, Moel Famau Country Park, and Clocaenog Forest, all of which offer stunning scenery. Further out, although still accessible by car, are the shoreline, Eryri (Snowdonia) National Park, and the historical city of Chester.
