Named after the 1651 construction of a stone bridge with five arches across the River Leven, the tiny community of Newby Bridge takes its name from the bridge's architectural feature. Haverthwaite and Newby Bridge are connected by the historic Furness Railway, one of the oldest standard gauge steam railways in Britain. Enjoy the naturally themed habitats at the Aquarium of the Lakes, which bring the history of the Lakes to life, or relax in one of the Lakeside Hotels with breathtaking views of Windermere and the surrounding fells. Bowness-on-Windermere is a beautiful place to spend the day, and nearby Gummer's How and Hawkshead are also worth visiting for their stunning scenery and quaint atmosphere, both of which attracted famous residents like William Wordsworth and Beatrix Potter.

Impressive mountains, open fells and clear-water lakes, the Lake District has it all. From walking in the mountains to exhilarating watersports or just a gentle cruise on a steam-powered yacht, Cumbria is the perfect holiday destination.
