The medieval town of Appleby-in-Westmorland is situated in a loop of the River Eden, with the North Pennines, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and the Lake District Fells visible on the western horizon. This is one of the loveliest towns in the north of England, set in the green Eden Valley and steeped in history. It was previously the county town of Westmorland. Appleby is set between the Lakes and the Yorkshire Dales, allowing visitors to take advantage of the contrasting landscapes of these two National Parks, as well as various walking and cycling options and the town's superb leisure complex.
