Sitting at the mouth of the River Tyne, a few miles downstream from Newcastle upon Tyne, is the coastal town of South Shields. Historically part of County Durham, South Shields, which had long been a shipbuilding centre, was taken over by heavy industries like coal mining and glassmaking in the 19th century. Today, it has become a thriving seaside town with a fabulous Blue Flag beach, attracting holidaymakers and visitors alike. The town is home to many attractions, including the South Shields Museum where visitors can delve into the history of the area, the Ocean Beach Pleasure Park, ideal for a family day out and the iconic Souter Lighthouse, where you can climb the 76 steps to the top for spectacular views. There are also plenty of scenic walking opportunities along the coastline over spectacular and cliffs and rocky bays, along with two fantastic parks, the South Marine and North Marine Park, which are perfect for an afternoon stroll. The centre of Newcastle can be reached in half an hour’s drive, where you can explore bustling high streets with a plethora of shops and eateries, uncover centuries of history and heritage and cross over the seven iconic bridges.

Northumberland is a heady combination of fishing villages, market towns, sandy beaches, magnificent castles and historic Hadrian’s Wall, tied together by beautiful countryside and abundant wildlife.
