Hope Cove, a little settlement on Devon's south coast, is nestled in the sheltering curve of Bigbury Bay. Sandcastle building and small-crustacean fishing can be done on the two beaches, which include soft sand and rock pools. Crabs and lobsters are still harvested in the town, which was previously a popular smuggling destination. For divers, the seashore is a hot site because of all the shipwrecks that lie beneath it. A smattering of pubs and eateries can be found just above the shore.

Devon, with its quiet country lanes, patchwork of lush green fields and sleepy villages is not to be missed. Stately home lovers will be spoiled and why not finish with a scrumptious Devonshire cream tea?
