The community is notable for its well dressing and carnival wakes, as well as its splendid church dedicated to St John the Baptist, nicknamed as "The Cathedral of the Peak." With rocky peaks to the north, mild slopes and dales to the south, and Millers Dale close outside the settlement, there is good walking. There are a number of excellent country inns, as well as a chemist, butchers, bakers, and a supermarket.
