Alnwick, Northumbria
Take a nostalgic journey back in time when you stay in this former railway station. Sleeping six guests, the comfortable, three-bedroom stone abode was once a bustling hive of activity. Situated 1.5 miles from Embleton and 8 miles from Alnwick, it now makes a magnificent base for exploring the picturesque Northumberland Heritage Coast, with its miles of golden sand and rocky outcrops. Let yourselves in via the porch, where you can hang your jackets and slide out of your beach sandals. Wander through to the light-filled lounge to sink into the soft seating and select a board game to set up or book to flick through. Find a film on the Smart TV instead for everyone to enjoy. There is also a lovely conservatory, where you can relax with a cup of tea and imagine all the busy travellers who waited here when this was a platform. When it is time to prepare the next meal, self-catering is easy in the contemporary kitchen/diner, with its neutral colour scheme and large table. There is also a TV in here for you to watch as you chop and stir. There’s also a family shower room and a utility room. The family bathroom is on the first floor, together with your bedrooms, two king-sized, each with a TV, and a twin, with an en-suite shower room. This cottage has off-road parking for two cars. Venture into Alnwick to potter in the shops, dine out and see the impressive castle. Spend time on the sandy beach at Embleton Bay, 2.5 miles away, where you can also pick up the Northumberland Coast Path. Head to Seahouses, 7.5 miles away, and walk 3 miles down the beach to dramatic Bamburgh Castle. Take in the far-reaching views towards Lindisfarne Holy Island.
