Once everything’s safely stowed, cross the hallway into a high-ceilinged lounge with French doors which open onto a patio. On cooler evenings, you can curl up before the wood burner, stream a favourite movie on the Smart TV and chill. Striking stone flooring flows throughout the ground floor, giving each room a fine contemporary feel. Nowhere is this more evident than in the sleek, skilfully crafted kitchen, which has bi-folding doors to bring the outside in and bar-style seating at a central kitchen island. This is the most westerly and remote of all the lakes, so even in high season, it’s a peaceful place to explore. The surrounding valley is one of the largest forests in Cumbria and there are many paths to discover here. Indulge your sense of adventure with a hike to Kinniside Stone Circle (1.5 miles) where, on a clear day, you can see the coast at Whitehaven, and beyond to Scotland and the Isle of Man. For a more laid-back day out, take a walk along the promenade or relax on the sandy beach at the coastal town of St Bees (7 miles).
