The village sits within an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and is on the historic Hadrian’s Wall trail with the Norman Church of St Mary’s built on a Roman Milecastle. There are numerous rural walks and nature reserves in the area, including Watchtree, a great family attraction. There are picnic areas close by with views of the River Eden and a children’s play area with zip wire. The Border City of Carlisle is a short drive away with The Lanes Shopping Centre, a variety of Coffee Shops in the paved central zone as well as the Tullie Museum. History enthusiasts will enjoy a visit to Carlisle Cathedral or the imposing Carlisle Castle. Further afield, the unspoilt Solway West Coast (10 miles) is waiting to be explored with exceptional wildlife watching opportunities. Or visit Silloth-on-Solway with its promonade, extensive town greens and original cobbled street. Other days out include the iconic village of Gretna Green (12 miles) and the stunning Talkin Tarn Country Park (16 miles). The central location allows for day trips into Scotland, Northumbria and the Lake District.
