The fishing village of Appledore is known for its stunning views, colourful cottages, fascinating lanes, characterful pubs and cafes, and wonderful walks. The South West Coast Path runs right outside the door. The path takes you on to Northam Burrows, around The Royal North Devon golf course (the oldest in England), along the surfing beach at Westward Ho! (2 miles), and on as far as you wish. The slipway to the estuary beach is only a few steps from the door. Appledore is known for great places to eat and drink (mostly dog-friendly), all within easy reach of the property. The North Devon Maritime Museum (500 metres) offers a glimpse into the area’s seafaring past. Enjoy the excellent independent shops as well as a top deli. There are boat trips from the quay, a small passenger ferry to Instow in the summer and, from Bideford (3.5 miles), trips to Lundy. The 18th-century fishermen’s cottage was originally two cottages and now offers a mix of antique and modern styles with some interesting pieces. The lounge includes two comfy sofas, a stone fireplace, remnants of an old staircase, and a beamed ceiling, with the courtyard beyond. The hallway leads to the kitchen with its double height ceiling and an informal window area – a sociable place for a chat while meals are prepared before going into the dining-room with its stone fireplace and windows to the courtyard. The ground floor also has a useful cloakroom with a WC, as well as a washing machine and deep freezer. Upstairs there is a king-size bedroom near the bathroom with a reading area. Another king-size bedroom which can be made up as a twin on request, has its own en-suite shower room. There is also another charming single bedroom with an iron bedstead. Outside, in the enclosed private walled courtyard, you can dine in style in good weather. A large car park (with EV points) is a level 150-metre walk away, and there is on-street parking (subject to availability).
