Have you ever slept in a folly before? This unusual holiday home, located within an 1820 tower within the grounds of a now-demolished country house, gives you the perfect opportunity. It’s been transformed into a cosy retreat perfect for four people, where you can even sit within the upper walls sipping your morning cuppa, surrounded by spectacular views over the Herefordshire countryside. The tower itself is a true wonder, comprising four floors that rise proudly from the surrounding cornfields. Inside, leave your coats and boots on the cosy ground floor, where you’ll also find the shower room, before climbing the solid oak staircase to the first floor. Here you’ll have an open-plan with clever fold-away bunk beds. The second floor consists of a snug king-size bedroom, while the third floor has a well-equipped kitchen and dining area. At the top, the lounge provides breathtaking 360-degree views from its gothic windows, along with access to the battlements, a.k.a the rooftop terrace perfect for sunset relaxation. In terms of outside space, the tower opens onto a wildflower meadow with a table and chairs for al fresco dining. There’s also a fire bowl that doubles as a BBQ – wonderful for those evening fresh-air feasts! You’ll be 1 mile from the lively market town of Hay-on-Wye, known for its annual book festival and packed with charming bookstores and cosy cafes. If you’re there on a Thursday, don’t miss the weekly farmer’s market. Head into the Brecon Beacons National Park for excellent walking and cycling routes, surrounded by scenery that will take your breath away. Up for a chilly swim? The Warren (4 miles), a local beach on the River Wye, is ideal for a dip or canoe hire.
