A 15-mile drive away and world-famous for its medieval religious heritage and 16th-century castle, Lindisfarne – also known as Holy Island – can be reached via a paved causeway when the tides permit. Less than 4 miles in the opposite direction, the fishing village of Seahouses has a bustling harbour where boats offer trips to the nearby Farne Islands, a haven for puffins and seals, plus dolphins can often be seen swimming in the surrounding waters.
