Our Verdict
The KONG Classic earns its legendary reputation. Whether you're keeping a bored dog occupied at home, helping a new puppy settle, or giving an anxious dog something to focus on, it genuinely delivers. Tough, versatile, and almost universally loved by dogs — it's one of the few products we'd recommend without hesitation to every dog owner.
Buy on Amazon- Incredibly durable — our dog has been chewing the same one for years.
- Endlessly versatile — stuff it with kibble, peanut butter, banana, or wet food.
- Freezing a stuffed KONG keeps dogs entertained for even longer.
- Dishwasher safe — easy to clean thoroughly.
- Available in multiple sizes and rubber strengths (puppy, classic, extreme).
- Great for reducing separation anxiety and boredom.
- Stuffing and freezing takes a little advance planning — not an instant fix.
- Some very determined power chewers can eventually get through the classic rubber — consider the Extreme version for these dogs.
What is the KONG Classic?
The KONG Classic is a hollow, snowman-shaped rubber toy designed to be stuffed with treats, food, or paste. Your dog works to extract the contents, which keeps them mentally stimulated and physically occupied — sometimes for a surprisingly long time.
It's made from KONG's proprietary natural rubber compound, which strikes a good balance between being firm enough to withstand serious chewing and flexible enough not to damage teeth. The unpredictable bounce when thrown is an added bonus that many dogs find irresistible.
Why it's great for dog-friendly holidays
One thing we particularly appreciate about the KONG Classic is how useful it is when you're away from home. A new environment can leave some dogs unsettled, and having a familiar, rewarding toy to focus on can make a real difference.
Whether you're keeping your dog occupied while you unpack, giving them something to do while the family sits down for dinner, or simply helping them wind down after a big day of walks and adventures, a stuffed KONG is one of the most effective tools we've found.
It's compact and lightweight enough to throw in your bag without a second thought — unlike bulkier toys that take up half your luggage.
What to stuff it with
Part of the appeal is just how many options you have. Some of our favourites:
- Peanut butter (make sure it's dog-friendly peanut butter!) – a classic choice that most dogs go absolutely mad for.
- Kibble mixed with wet food – a good way to stretch out mealtimes and slow down fast eaters.
- Mashed banana or cooked sweet potato – healthy and very palatable for most dogs.
- Frozen fillings – stuff the KONG, seal the small end with a piece of banana or biscuit, and freeze overnight. This dramatically extends how long your dog will spend on it.
Choosing the right size and rubber type
KONG makes it easy to find the right version for your dog. Sizes run from XS (for dogs under 5lbs) up to XXL (for very large breeds), with a useful size guide on the packaging and the KONG website.
As well as size, there are three rubber compounds to choose from: the pink Puppy version uses softer rubber for developing teeth; the standard red Classic suits most adult dogs; and the black Extreme is designed for particularly powerful chewers who tear through normal rubber toys.
